Server Under Maintenance

Dear players,

the game server will be closed for maintenance until somewhere next week.
We need this time to update the server and game contents to the new, overhauled
version.

Stay tuned and thank you for your patience!

Progress

Yep, this project is actually alive.

It may not seem like it though. But Gonzo is being worked at diligently.

It’s got a new graphics engine that should provide much better frame rates and gives us the opportunity to build in lighting, weather and other nice effects more easily.
Based on the knowledge we’ve gained from the first release in March this year, we are currently overhauling inventory, economy, combat, crafting, character development, loot, items – basically a lot of stuff. There will be new regions in the game world, waiting for players to explore. NPC dialogs and first quests will be introduced, along with the potential to create your own. Thousands of new graphic textures have been added to the game – be sure to check out the readme file for credits and links.

Game server and client are under development. You can log on, build stuff and play the game as far as it goes at this point. You may encounter crashes (in fact, we’ve fixed a few just recently). Things may be odd; especially if you log on in a time when changes on the live server happen. Please be aware that, in this development time and until further notice, your items (dynamic objects in your possession) may be removed from the server when they get obsolete or replaced. When the character system changes, skill points and runes may be lost. Anyhow, when the 2nd release goes officially on-line, all player characters will be fully resetted to level 0, all their dynamic belongings will be removed. This wipe does not include static constructions on your estates or worlds. We reserve the right, however, to delete estates and worlds that we find to be not that much sophisticated. But don’t worry. If you have built even the simplest of recognisable structure (like a small house or even just a storage), you’re safe.

We plan to get that 2nd release live somewhere in the later months this year. Every player who already has an account will be notified via email. A full list of changes since the last change log will be issued at release time.

That’s it for now. See ya later!

Monday Update

The update contains:

  • Bugfix: character limit per line when removing characters over line break fixed.
  • Bugfix: internal server fixes that caused object deletion errors on clients.
  • Change: reworked combat music; many thanks to Kuchner!
  • New: single item unstacking with mouse drag&drop or Q while having SHIFT pressed.
  • New: you can now also plant seeds when they lay on the ground individually (not as stack).

growing_unstacked

Coming up next: reworking of enemy NPCs, making combat way more challenging…

Update

Some changes, additions and fixes

The update contains:

  • Automatic line breaks in text input windows. The automatic line break right now is per-character. This will be improved to make it break per-word in the future.
  • Remaining effect duration is now shown.
  • Changed some text colors in the message window (From:, To:, Subject:) to make it a bit more appealing.
  • Deco base objects are now shown when being in editor -> object -> deco mode and hovering over a deco object.
  • Bugfix: Un-fixing non-planted seeds won’t destroy them anymore.
  • Bugfix: Dynamically updated objects (such as opened doors) are now correctly updated, even if no player is around (fixes the doors-not-closing-if-too-far-away-bug).
  • Fixed rendering of deco objects when the base object isn’t on-screen. However, if the base object is too far away (like 1 room or more), there are still some rendering issues, so don’t connect deco objects with base objects too far away.
  • Refreshed buff, Exhausted debuff and Frozen debuff weakened.
  • Haste buff strengthened.

Big Update

Farming, Status Effects and Consumable Overhaul

Hey guys!
Sorry for the long waiting period. We felt that the long promised farming feature wouldn’t be truly legitimate on its own. Without additional features it would have been just another way of getting the same items as you’d get through NPC-combat. So we overhauled the consumables and added a temporary character status effects system. There are lots of new items and even some new skills.

Farming
The new farming feature is an approach to accommodate more peaceful players with the ability to receive items, resources and wealth. To successfully grow plants you need seeds and nutrients.

growing_inv_seeds_nutrients
Seeds come in eight known colors: black, red, green, yellow, blue, magenta, cyan and white.
A seed yields a slow, medium or fast growing plant. Slow growing seeds are the most rare ones, as they give the highest reward on harvesting.

growing_seeds

Every plant has a certain amount of growth stages (i.e. how many times you have to feed the plant), a certain feeding time (i.e. after which the plant withers if it doesn’t get nutrients) and a certain growing time (i.e. the time the plant needs to advance to the next growth stage after feeding).
If a plant reaches the growth stage ripe, it can be harvested and will give pixels of its color and items as reward.

The three growing speeds should suit a wide range of players and should cover most playing styles/paces.

  • Fast Growinggrowth stages: 3, feeding time: 30 minutes, growing time: 5 minutes
  • Medium Growinggrowth stages: 4, feeding time: 24 hours, growing time: 4 hours
  • Slow Growinggrowth stages: 5, feeding time: 72 hours, growing time: 24 hours

To cultivate plants you’ll need nutrients. The nutrient a plant needs to grow depends on its color. Currently, there are: Blackberries, Red Wine, Soylent Green, Honey, Blue Stuff, Cotton Candy, Moonshine Water and Bone Meal.

growing_nutrients

Seeds and nutrients can currently be found in NPC loot.

How does it work?
To plant a seed you need to be on your property (estate or owned world). The seed needs to be in your inventory. Just click left on it and it will automatically be placed beneath you on the ground and fixed – the growing process starts.
Note: un-fixing a thusly planted seed or plant will destroy it – no relocating!

growing_example01

Feeding the thing is as easy as left-clicking on it. If you have the right amount of nutrients in your inventory.

growing_example02

After the growing time the plant will reach the next growth stage.

growing_example03

Repeat until the plant is ripe.

growing_example04

If you wait too long, the plant will wither and your only option is to remove it without getting any reward.

growing_example05

Feeding and harvesting plants grants you exploration runes.

New Skills (exploration)

  • Fast Growing: Reduces plant grow time.
  • Farming: Increases harvest yield (pixels and items).

Status Effects
A new system has been implemented that allows for putting temporary status effects on any character. Currently, this system is used with the new consumables, but is in no way constrained to that.

statuseffects_example

Here are some effects, that are currently implemented with consumables:

  • Regenerating: Hitpoint regeneration bonus.
  • Fierce: Attack damage bonus.
  • Blessed: Stronger defenses.
  • Refreshed: Stamina regeneration bonus.
  • Sly: Critical hit chance bonus.
  • Mighty: Stronger knockback.
  • Haste: Move speed bonus.
  • Frenzy: Attack speed bonus.
  • Bleeding: Negative hitpoint regeneration override.
  • Wimpy: Attack damage penalty.
  • Cursed: Weakened defenses.
  • Exhausted: Negative stamina regeneration override.
  • Blinded: Critical hit chance penalty.
  • Depressed: Weaker knockback.
  • Frozen: Impaired move speed.
  • Diseased: Attack speed penalty.

This new system allows for exciting additions in the future, like casting magic spells, weapons that deal effects on enemies and even groups of NPCs that buff and heal each other and debuff players.

Consumable Overhaul
One general addition to consumables is the cooldown. Burning through stacks of berries and cheese in mere seconds doesn’t work anymore. Cooldowns apply per-item-type. That means that there are seperate cooldowns for berries, fish, cheese and so on. Those cooldowns appear in the upper left of the screen.

consumable_cooldowns

Simple Consumables
Those can be found in the wilderness, for example by cutting berry bushes.

consumables_simple

Normal Consumables
Those are usually found in NPC loot and can be bought at merchants to some extent.

consumables_normal

Simple and normal consumables have very basic effects, such as instantly healing hitpoints or stamina.

Special Consumables
Special consumables can only be obtained by the new farming feature. Currently there are eight different special consumables implemented – one for each plant color:

  • Caviar – black plants
  • Lobster – red plants
  • Spinach – green plants
  • Beer – yellow plants
  • Blue Mussel – blue plants
  • Candy Bar – magenta plants
  • Synthetic Meal – cyan plants
  • Tofu – white plants

consumables_farming

Special consumables come in one of three different rarities: common, uncommon and rare. They drop from plants with certain grow speeds.

  • Common: Drop from fast growing plants.
  • Uncommon: Drop from medium growing plants.
  • Rare: Drop from slow growing plants.

The consumable’s rarity defines its effect strength and duration. Rare consumables are the most powerful ones.
Note: similar effects don’t stack. The strongest active effect of one kind applies.

consumable_example

Beware of side effects!
Special consumables not only apply a beneficial effect to the consumer, but yield a chance to apply a negative side effect as well. Side effect chances are added up on consumption and apply as long as the effect lasts. Side effects range from minor discomforts to dangerous death-bringing hazards.

New Skill: Strong Stomach (combat)
Luckily, along comes a brand new skill that reduces the chance of side effects kicking in.

Additional Update Notes

  • New destructibles, that yield basic consumables, can be found.
  • Old berries, cheese, fish and rich meal items have been deleted serverwide, because their definition files were deprecated.
  • The exact RGBA-values are now shown via tooltip when hovering over the color bars in editor mode.
  • Container windows are opened at the same position they have been closed at (per client session).
  • Skills display improved – important numbers are highlighted and the overall skill effects per branch are shown.
  • Automatic stacking into inventory sub-containers – When pressing Q for quick-item-pickup, the game now looks for incomplete stacks of that item, also in containers you have in your inventory. This’ll prove a very useful feature due to the higher amount of different items in NPC loot. You can now vastly increase you inventory size while maintaining easy stacking on quick-pickup!

Again, sorry this update took so long. Both of us, Lithion and me, also got sick during the last weeks, which prolonged the development time. We plan to put updates out in a higher frequency again.
